ISS Rail

New Castle Industrial RR

ISS Rail (Interstate Specialty Services--Rail) was formed in 1991 to serve ISS-Car (Interstate Specialty Services--Car), a repair car facility that was doing periodic inspections on Detroit Edison unit trains.  Jim Hill owned ISS--Car and Dale Berkley (a former P&LE Trainmaster) owned ISS--Rail.  They formed the operation working together --Jim did the car work and Dale ran the railroad.  Most of the line was former PRR-PC-Conrail E&P Branch that originally ran from New Castle to Erie--only a couple of miles remained at New Castle.  Dale later acquired some former W&A, P&LE, and some other pieces around Mahoningtown and New Castle. After the DE business went by the wayside ISS-Car began doing car repair for private car owners and quite possibly Class 1's also.  He now operates as Hill Railroad Car Company, using (or leasing) an RS-4TC1 (61226).  He previously operated a Porter 65-tonner (8114), and an ex-Conrail bug slug.
In 2002 ISS-Rail changed their name to New Castle Industrial Railroad to better address their business--serving the industries on New Castle's south side, including KRL (Kasgro Rail Car), Ellwood Quality Steel, a scrap yard, a plastic manufacturer, and a few others.  Doing quite well the last time I was there.  I seem to recall them working a daylight and an afternoon crew Monday-Friday.    --Steve Timko

Health is Gods great gift, and we must spend it entirely for Him. Our eyes should see only for God, our feet walk only for Him, our hands labor for Him alone; in short, our entire body should serve God while we still have the time. Then, when He shall take our health and we shall near our last day, our conscience will not reproach us for having misused it.

---St. John Bosco
