Fruit Growers Supply Co.
On one of the discussion lists recently, there was a reference to this company which was owned by the Sunkist people. Here is a photo of one of their locomotives.
3 was built by Climax in December 1912, #932, and was formerly Northern California Lumber Co. 3.
Tim Purdy has sent us the following additional history.
The Fruit Growers Supply Company No. 3 Climax was used at their operations at Hilt, Siskiyou County until about 1925, when it was just then used for switching cars at the mill. After the 1932 logging season Fruit Growers discontinued their railroad logging operations at Hilt and would eventually sell of their rolling stock. In 1930 the No. 3 appears in the Company records on te inventory of disposable equipment valued at $1,900 and later someone crossed out that figure and wrote junk. For years the No. 3 sat alongside an old freight shed, until 1954 it was donated to the Southern California Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Society.
