Gulf & Ohio Railways

This company operates 8 short lines railroads in the South East.

60 was built by Baldwin on May 1922, #55390. It later became Texas & New Orleans 220, Class E-40, in 1925. It was later renumbered 260 on August 31, 1950, and then sold to Comite Southern as 2 on September 14, 1954. It later became Louisiana Eastern 2 and was sold to Stone Mountain Scenic RR and dressed up as Texas II in May 1962. It was sold to Gulf & Ohio Ry in 2013 and assigned as Three Rivers Rambler 60.

119, SW1, was built by Electro-Motive in August 1949, #7511, FN E1070-10, as Union RR 464, Class D-57.  It was sold as Laurinburg & Southern 119 in August 1985and assigned as Nash County RR 119.  It was sold as G&O 119 in February 1994 and scrapped in March 2012.

1051, NW2, was built by Electro-Motive in July 1947, #4760, FN E828-12, as Southern Ry 2260.  It was renumbered 1051 in December 1972 and sold to Birmingham Rail & Locomotive Co in October 1983.  It was sold as Hartford & Slocomb RR 1051 and merged as G&O 1051.

1504, SW1500, was built by Electro-Motive in May 1969, #34877, FN 7165-5, as Alton & Southern RR 1504.  It was sold as Conecuh Valley RR 1504 in 2006 and transferred as G&O 1504.  It was transferred as Knoxville & Holston River RR 1504.

2881, GP38, was built by Electro-Motive in June 1966, #31783, FN 7895-2, as Norfolk Southern Ry 2002.  It was acquired by Southern Ry and rebuilt as Carolina & Northwestern 2881 in 1974.  It was sold as Georgia & Florida Railnet RR 2881 and sold to G&O as 2881.  It was rebuilt by Knoxville Locomotive Works as KLWX 2250, a KLW20B, in 2012.

2883, GP38, was built by Electro-Motive in October 1966, #32309, FN 7925-2, as NSRy 2004.  It was acquired by Southern and rebuilt as CRN 2883 in 1974.  It was sold to G&O as 2883.

3872, GP9u, was built by Electro-Motive in February 1959, #25016, FN 5590-1, as Saint Louis South-Western 826, Class Z-17.5.  It was renumbered 3647, Class EF418C-2, in 1966 and rebuilt as 3872, Class EF418S-2, in June 1975.  It was sold as Wiregrass Central RR 3872 and assigned as Knoxville & Holston River RR 3872.  It was reassigned as Three Notch RR and assigned as G&O 3872.

6226, Class MRSE-17, was built by Electro-Motive in July 1957, #23385, FN 5542-18, as Chesapeake & Ohio 6226, Class MRSE-17.  It became Class GP-9 in 1965 and sold as Wiregrass Central RR 6226 and transferred as G&O 6226.  It was sold as Mississippi Delta RR 6226.

8104, GP9u, was built by Electro-Motive in March 1956, #20283, FN 5383-2, as Illinois Central 9104. It was rebuilt at Paducah in September 1975 as IC 8104 and later sold to G&O as 8104.

8136, GP9u, was built by Electro-Motive in January 1958, #23858, FN 5553-59, as IC 9358. It was rebuilt at Paducah as 8136 in April 1977 and later sold to G&O as 8136 in March 24, 1994.   

8274, GP9u, was built by Electro-Motive in November 1954, #19764, FN 5353-3, as Florida East Coast 653.  It was rebuilt at Paducah as Illinois Central Gulf 8274 in October 1972 and later sold to G&O as 8274 on March 24, 1994.

8309, GP9u, was built by Electro-Motive in April 1954, #19269, FN 5321-B64, GP9B, as Union Pacific 193B.  It was rebuilt at Paducah in September 1977 as ICG 8309 and later sold to G&O as 8309.

8314, GP9u, was built by Electro-Motive in April 1954, #19264, GP9B, FN 5321-B59, as UP 188B. It was rebuilt at Paducah in October 1977 as ICG 8314 and later sold to G&O as 8314.


Columbia & Silver Creek RR

3059, GP-30, was built in May 1963, #27753, FN 7657-2, as Louisville & Nashville 1030, Class GP-30.  It became Seaboard System 1361 and CSX Transportation 4059, Class GP-30, in 1987.  It resold as Sequatchi Valley Switching Co 4059 and resold as Pine Belt Southern  RR 3059.  It then went to Southern Alabama RR 3059 and then to CLSL 3059.  It was acquired as Southern Appalachian RR Museum as 1030 and sent to Waldens Railroad RR as 1030.

9424, GP18, was built by Electro-Motive in July 1963, #24287, FN 5651-10, as Illinois Central 9424.  It was sold as CLSL 9424 and resold as South Alabama RR 9424.  It was sold as Wiregrass Central RR 9424 and sold to National Railway Equipment Co as NREX 9424.  It was sold as Inter-Rail Group Inc as IRTX 9424 in July 2012.


Conecuh Valley RR

1504, SW1500, was built by Electro-Motive in May 1969, #34877, FN 7165-5, as Alton & Southern RR 1504.  It was sold as COEH 1504 in 2006 and transferred as Gulf & Ohio RR 1504.  It was transferred as Knoxville & Holston River RR 1504.

3615, GP38, was built by Electro-Motive in August 1969, #34390, FN 7138-5, as PC 7761, Class EF-20. It became Conrail 7761, Class GP-38, in April 1976, and was sold to CM&W as 7761 in 1986. It was renumbered 2022 and became GW 2022. It later went to Helm as 2022 and was rebuilt as 3615.  It was sold as Yadkin Valley RR 3615 in 2005 and assigned as COEH 3615.  It was renumbered 2022 in April 2013.


Knoxville & Holston River RR

171, SW1001m, was built by Electro-Motive in October 1968, #34264, FN 4550-3, as Ford Motor Co 10016, SW1001.  It was rebuilt for Herzog Contracting as 171, MPM VI, SW1001m, in February 2003, and sold as KXHR 171 in April 2006.  It was sold to Progress Rail Services as PRLX 171 in March 2013.

173, SW1001m, was built by Electro-Motive October 1973, #72652-2, FN 72652-2, as Ford 10020.  It was rebuilt for Herzog as 173 in February 2003 and sold as KXHR 173 in April 2006.  It became Knoxville Locomotive Works as KLWX Inc 2001 and sold as PRLX 2001 in February 2015.  It was sold to CIT Financial Group as CEFX 1592 in March 2015.

1012, SW1, was built by Electro-Motive in August 1947, #4744, FN E827-2, as Southern Ry 2008. It was renumbered 1012 in December 1972 and retired in November 1994.  It was sold as KXHR 1012 and sold as Waldens Ridge RR 1012.

1504, SW1500, was built by Electro-Motive in May 1969, #34877, FN 7165-5, as Alton & Southern RR 1504.  It was sold as Conecuh Valley RR 1504 in 2006 and transferred as Gulf & Ohio RR 1504.  It was transferred as KXHR 1504.

2002, MP15, was built by Electro-Motive in May 1976, #756119-8, FN 756119-8, as United States Steel MinnTac 962 .  It was sold as Trinity Industries as TLLX 962 in 1998 and sold as TECX 2002 (unknown).  It was sold as KXHR 2002.

2005, GP38, was built by Electro-Motive in November 1967, #33684, FN 7060-54, as Chesapeake & Ohio 3853, Class GP-38.  It was sold as Intermountain Transportation Services 201 and later sold as Chicago Central & Pacific 2005.  It was sold as Railcar Ltd 2005 and sold as KXHR 2005 in 2005.

2391, GP7, was built by Electro-Motive in February 1953, #17779, FN 5247-5, as Louisville & Nashville 511, Class GP-7.  It was renumbered 2391 and became became Seaboard System 2391 in January 1983.  It was sold as Alabama & Florida RR 2391 and transferred as Wiregrass Central RR 2391 in 1993.  It was transferred as Nash County RR 2391 in 1994 and Atlantic & Gulf RR 2391 in 1994.  It was transferred as Georgia & Florida Railnet 2391 in 1997 and transferred as Lexington & Ohio RR 2391 in 1998.  It was transferred as KXHR 2391.

2561 was built in October 1962, #27432, FN 5636-37, Southern Ry 2561.  It became Norfolk Southern 2561, Class GP30, and sold as Sequatchie Valley RR 2561.  It was sold as Southern Alabama RR and sold as KXRR 2561.  It was sold as Waldons Ridge RR 2561 and sold to Vintage Locomotives Inc VLIX 2561.  It was sold to Southern Appalachian RR Museum and restored as Southern 2561.

3614, GP38, was built by Electro-Motive in August 1969, #35376, FN 51919-73, as Penn Central 7747, Class EF-20. It became Consolidated Railroad Corp 7747, Class GP-38, in April 1976, and was sold to CM&W as 7747 in 1986. It was renumbered 2020 and became Gateway Western 2020 in 1990. It later went to Helm Leasing as 2020 and was rebuilt as 3614.  It was sold as Yadkin Valley RR 3614 in 2005 and became KXHR 3614 in 2006.  It became Carolina Southern RR 4002 in 2008.

3872, GP9u, was built by Electro-Motive in February 1959, #25016, FN 5590-1, as Saint Louis South-Western 826, Class Z-17.5.  It was renumbered 3647, Class EF418C-2, in 1966 and rebuilt as 3872, Class EF418S-2, in June 1975.  It was sold as Wiregrass Central RR 3872 and assigned as KXHR 3872.  It was reassigned as Three Notch RR and assigned as Gulf & Ohio 3872.

8395, GP7u, was built by Electro-Motive in December 1955, #20840, FN 5411-10, as Detroit Toledo & Ironton 987.  It was rebuilt at Paducah as Illinois Central 8395  in 1976 and sold as Atlantic & Gulf 8395 on June 17, 1993.  It was assigned as Knoxville & Holston 8395, Georgia & Florida 8395, and Hartwell RR 8395.


Knoxville Locomotive Works

140, SW1, was built by Electro-Motive in February 1952, #16116, FN 6379-1, as Republic Steel Co 352.  It was sold as Laurinburg & Southern  140 in September 1993 sold to Johnson Rail Service as JRWX 142.  It was sold as KLWX 140 and scrapped by East Tennessee Railcar Services in March 2012.

142, SW1, was built by Electro-Motive in March 1951, #14098, FN 6240-1, as Republic Steel 304.  It was renumbered 825 and sold as LRS 142 in September 1993.  It was sold as JRWX 142 and sold as KLWX 142 and scrapped by East Tennessee Railcar Services in March 2012.

2001, SW1001m, was built by Electro-Motive October 1973, #72652-2, FN 72652-2, as Ford Motor Co 10020.  It was rebuilt for Herzog Contracting as 173 in February 2003 and sold as Knoxville & Holston River 173 in April 2006.  It became Knoxville Locomotive Works as KLWX Inc 2001 and sold to Progress Rail Services  as PRLX 2001 in February 2015.  It was sold to CIT Financial Group as CEFX 1592 in March 2015.

2273, GP38M-3, was built by Electro-Motive in December 1971, #39257, FN 5811-21, as Chesapeake & Ohio 3791, Class GP-40.  It was renumbered 6566 and became CSX Transportation 6566, Class GP-40, in 1987.  It was rebuilt by Boise Locomotive in March 1998 as Texas-Mexican RR 1173, GP38M-2.  It was sold to First Union Rail as FURX 2273 and sold as Yadkin Valley RR 2273 in 2007.  It was transferred as KLWX Inc 2273 in 2009.

6001, SD40-2, was built by Electro-Motive in May 1973, #72684-30, FN 72864-30, as UnionPacific 3232, Class SD40-2.  It was retired on July 16, 2007, and sold as KLWX 6001.

6005, SD40-2, was built by Electro-Motive in March 1978, #776088-5, FN 776088-5 as UP 3414, Class SD40-2.  It was retired on October 31, 2002, and renumbered 7888 on November 7, 2003,  It was retired on January 24, 2008, and sold as KLWX 6005 in 2009.


South Alabama RR

9424, GP18, was built by Electro-Motive in July 1963, #24287, FN 5651-10, as Illinois Central 9424.  It was sold as Columbia & Silver Creek 9424 and resold as SAUB 9424.  It was sold as Wiregrass Central RR 9424 and sold to National Railway Equipment Co as NREX 9424.  It was sold as Inter-Rail Group Inc as IRTX 9424 in July 2012.


Three Notch RR

Yadkin Valley RR

This short line was formed as a subsidiary of Laurinburg & Southern in December 1989 when trackage out of Rural Hall, NC, was purchased from Norfolk Southern. It had been a pair of Southern Ry branches. In March 1995 it became a part of Gulf & Ohio.

109, GP38, was built by Electro-Motive in October 1967, #33344, FN 7060-77, as Baltimore & Ohio 3826, Class GP-38. It was later 2026 and then became CSX Transportation 2026, Class GP-38. It was retired on June 23, 1994, and sold to Helm Leasing Corp as 2026 in August 15, 1994. It was rebuilt by Peoria Locomotive in June 1995 in Helm Atlantic Leasing as 109. It later became YVRR as 109 in 1998.

202, GP7, was built by Electro-Motive in October 1952, #17039, FN 5172-7, as Chesapeake & Ohio 5818, Class MRSE-15. In 1964 it was reclassified Class GP-7. It was sold to Livingston Rebuild Center and then to YVRR as 202 in July 1990. In 1995 it became G&O 202.

203, GP7, was built by Electro-Motive in April 1953, #18051, FN 5252-16, as C&O 5877, Class MRSE-15. In 1964 it was reclassified Class GP-7. It was sold to Livingston Rebuild Center and then to YVRR as 203 in July 1990. In 1995 it became G&O 202.

204, GP9, was built by Electro-Motive in March 1957, #22930, FN 5516-19, as Southern Pacific 5748, Class DF-611.  It was renumbered 3589, Class EF418-7. in 1966 and rebuilt as 2877, Class ES418E-2, in 1977.  It was sold as YVRR 204 and sold as Atterbury Grain Co 204.

205, GP9, was built by Electro-Motive in February 1955, #20344, FN 5385-9, as Northern Pacific 212. It became Burlington Northern 1712, Class GP-9, in 1970. It was retired in February 1990 and sold to Livingston Rebuild Center in April 1990. It was sold to YVRR as 205 in January 1991 and went to G&O in 1995.

206, GP9, was built by Electro-Motive February 1957, #22781, FN 5524-20, as NP 298. It became BN 1736, Class GP-9, in 1970. It was retired in February 1990 and sold to Livingston Rebuild Center in April 1990. It was sold to YVRR as 206 in January 1991 and went to G&O in 1995.

6005, SD40-2, was built by Electro-Motive in February 1974, #74609-14, FN 74609-14, as Chicago & North Western 6829.  It became Union Pacific 2977, Class SD40-2, on April 2, 1998, and retired on April 6, 2009.  It was sold as YVRR 6005.

8067, GP9u, was built by Electro-Motive in January 1957, #22328, FN 5517-6, as Illinois Central 9205.  It was rebuilt at Paducah in May 1973 as IC 8067.  It was sold to YVRR as 8067 on January 6, 1995, and sold to National Railway Equipment Co as NREX 8067 in 2006.  It was sold to Inter-Rail Group Inc as IRTX 8067 in July 2012.

8090, GP9u, was built by Electro-Motive in December 1955, #20757, FN 5409-2, as IC 9119. It was rebuilt at Paducah in February 1975 as IC 8090 and later sold to G&O as YVRR 8090.

8092, GP7u, was built by Electro-Motive in April 1953, #17722, FN 6495-2, as IC 8907. It was rebuilt at Paducah in January 1975 as IC 8092 and later sold to G&O as YV 8092.

G&O 8104, GP9u, was built by Electro-Motive in March 1956, #20263, FN 5383-2, as IC 9104. It was rebuilt at Paducah in September 1975 as IC 8104 and later sold to G&O as 8104.

8311, GP9Bu, was built by Electro-Motive in February 1954, #19231, FN 5321-B26, as Union Pacific 155B. It was rebuilt in September 1977 as Illinois Central Gulf 8311 and sold as Atlantic & Gulf RR 8311 on May 28, 1990.  It became Georgia & Florida Railnet 8311 in 1999 and Georgia & Florida Ry 8311 in 2004.  It assigned as YV 8311 and sold as Carolina Coastal Ry 8311 in 2007.

9552, GP40-2L, was built by General Motors in March 1975, #A3187, FN C376-22, as Canadian National 9552, Class GF-430c.  It was retired on June 20, 2001, and sold to Alstom.  They sold it to YV 9552 in 2003.
