Britton Lumber Co.

This company came into existence on July 9, 1904, when W. H. Britton and E. P. Rodwell (d/b/a Britton Lumber Co.) bought the existing sawmill plant and logging railroad of the Lake Lumber Company located at Lakewood, Walton County, Florida. The standard-gauge logging railroad servicing this mill was laid eastward from Lakewood and was approximately 50 miles in length when the oncoming Depression forced the Britton mill to cease operation in 1930.

Despite the fact that Britton Lumber had a Shay numbered 7, the company owned only a total of six locomotives (four 2-truck Shays and two Baldwin 2-6-2's).

The owners of the Britton mill kept thinking they would eventually get back into operation and did operate the planing mill at Lakewood spasmodically through 1931. However, when the Central of Georgia Ry. filed a request to abandon their branch (unused for six years) from Florala, Ala., to Lakewood, Fla., in 1938, the mill and a lot of the logging railroad equipment was still deteriorating at Lakewood. Britton Lumber was then forced to finally liquidate their physical assets and the CofG removed their rails in Spring 1939. I bet you didn't know that the Central of Georgia Ry. ever operated in the State of Florida! It was less than three miles of track, but the CofG did operate in a State other than Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee which are the only three that most fans know about! ---Tom Lawson

Florida & South Western Railway

I received an email from Faye Perry requesting help in locating a narrow gauge locomotive which operated some years ago near St. Augustine, FL. She sent a copy of the brochure advertising rides. Adults are 75 cents. This would really age this piece. The locomotive was built by Fred Perry in 1945 in a machine shop in his back yard. He is shown in the cab of the locomotive in the picture. Mrs. Perry has access to construction photos. In this picture, Mrs. Perry's husband and his grand-father are shown with her two oldest sons.

After posting this the first time, we were told the locomotive was purchased by Elliott Donnelly and sent to Wisconsin Dells for rebuilding by Sandley. It was taken apart and the boiler was apparently scrapped. The remains of the locomotive were sold to a buyer in California after Norman Sandley's death. And there the trail goes cold.
