Indianapolis & Cincinnati Traction Co.
Indianapolis & Southeastern RR
The I&CT was promted to be a high speed electric line between the cities of its name beginning in 1902. By 1905 41 miles of road was opened from Indianapolis to Rushville using Westinghouse single-phase AC electrification. It was extended another 17 miles to Connersville in 1906. Meanwhile the Indianapolis Shelbyville & Southeastern Traction opened a 28 miles line from Indianapolis to Shelbyville in 1902 using conventional DC electrification. In 1906 it was building a 21 mile extension to Greensburg and was purchased by the I&CT who completed the extension in 1907 and electrified the entire line with single-phase AC. The system went bankrupt in 1906 and emerged in 1910 without changing its name, but further extension would be prevented. Several proposals were made including the use of the new Cincinnati subway, but they came to naught. The biggest problem was in the selection of equipment. Finally, in 1923, the system was rebuilt with conventional 600 volt DC and the old rolling stock was replaced with 12 Cincinnati combines which were already obsolete when built. In 1929 these cars were replaced by 13 Cincinnati curved side lightweights. Eight of the cars were sold to the Milwaukee Electric and 4 to Union Traction of Indiana. At the same time the company was reorganized as I&SE. On January 14, 1932, the system closed and was replaced by buses. The lightweights were sold to various companies and 6 of them later again replaced the heavy weight cars in Milwaukee.
