Chicago Transit Authority

6001-6200 Series RT Cars

When CTA took over the Rapid Transit, they inherited a large number of wooden cars from early in the century,  plus a large number of steel cars which were 25 years old, and a few experimental cars. They turned to St. Louis Car and introduced a rapid transit car based on PCC principles. 6001 thru 6030 were the first ordered in 1948. Delivery began in August 1950. The paint scheme was similar to that on the surface PCCs. Immediately another 70 cars were ordered to make a total of 200 cars.

They came as married pairs. When the next order was made, these original cars were retrofitted with a newer style conductor cab which allowed the conductor to remain inside the car instead of having to work thru the end doors. Other changes included moving the headlights from the dash to a position above the end door and moving the destination sign from there to the upper part of the left hand window. Various paint schemes appeared over the almost 40 years of service.

A few cars were wrecked over the years, but retirement began in 1973. The last car ran on December 4, 1992.

Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you.  All things pass.  God does not change.  Patience achieves everything.  Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices.
