Elkhart & Western RR

Construction on the E&W began in 1890 and was completed in 1893. It was built by Dr. Herbert Bucklin, who made his fortune selling salve. Thus the line became known as the "Arnica Salve Line". It was built between Elkhart and Mishawaka to provide competition for the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern which had a monopoly on service in Elkhart. In 1898 it was purchased by the LS&MS which became part of the New York Central in 1912. In 1996 the Michigan Southern purchased the remaining 8.9 miles of the line from Conrail and operated it as the E&W Division of MSO. It was later separated from the MSO under Pioneer management.

I don't have roster information on 78, an S2 built by Alco.

1000, GP7u, was built by Electro-Motive in October 1950, #11048, FN 5019-17, as Great Northern 622, Class GP-7.  It became Burlington Northern 1522, Class GP-7, in 1970 and sold as Potlatch Forests Inc 1522 in January 1972.  It was rebuilt at Paducah as Illinois Central Gulf  8465 in September 1976 and sold to Canac on May 20, 2000.  It was sold as Pioneer Rail Equipment Co as 1000 and assigned as E&W 1000.

Thanks for roster information: Randy Keller.

If angels could be jealous of men, they would be so for one reason: Holy Communion.
