M&StP 16 was built by Schenectady in June 1856, #156, as LaCrosse & Milwaukee 16. In 1863 it became M&StP 16. It was retired by 1892.

M&StP 21, "E. B. Wakeman". was built by Mason in September 1856, #48, as LC&M 21, "Erastus Corning".  It became M&StP in 1863 and renamed about that time.  It was retired by 1888.

M&StP 37, "Fred Merrill", is believed to have been built by Norris in 1848. Its previous owner is unknown. It was rebuilt in 1867 and was gone by 1885.

M&StP 40, "L. B. Rock", Class H, was built by Menominee in 1854 as Milwaukee Watertown & Baraboo 1. It became Milwaukee & Watertown 1 almost immediately. In 1856 it became LaCrosse & Milwaukee 56 "Luther A. Cole". In 1863 it became M&StP 40, "L. B. Rock". It was gone by 1899.

That's my great grandfather standing next to his engine (the "L.B. Rock") on your 4-4-0s page. I have his gold retirement watch from the M-St.Paul Railroad still. I was amazed to see this photo (which I have on my wall) on your site. Terrific! Thanks for making my day!!

M&StP 71, "Iowa", was built by Norris in 1848 as Milwaukee & Mississippi 1 "Bob Ellis." It was the first locomotive on the railroad. In 1868 it became Milwaukee & St. Paul 71 "Iowa". It was rebuilt in 1869. In 1876 the name was changed to CM&StP. It was gone by 1887.

M&StP 75, "Milwaukee", Class H, was built by Schenectady in June 1852, #11, as Milwaukee & Mississippi 5 "E.Corning". It was rebuilt in 1859 and in 1861 it became Milwaukee & Prairie du Chien 5. It became M&StP 75 in 1868. It was gone by 1888.

M&StP 86, "Mazomanie", Class H, was built by Portland in September 1854, #72, as M&M 16 "E.D.Holton". It became M&StP 86 in 1868 and was gone by 1899.

M&StP 87, Class H, was built by Schenectady in August 1854, #93, as M&M 17 "W.W.Howard". It became M&StP 87 in 1868 and was retired in 1886.

111, Class H, was built by Breese Kneeland & Co in May 1857, #73, as M&M 40 "Spring Green".  It became Milwaukee & Prairie de Chien Ry 40 "Prairie du Chien" in January 1861 and became M&StP 111 in December 1867.  It became CM&StP 111 in February 1874 and sold to Busse & Norton, dealer.  It was sold as Arizona & South Eastern RR 1 in July 1889 and became El Paso & Southwestern RR 1 on June 17, 1902. It was retired on April 30, 1909 and put on display at El Paso on August 8, 1909.  It was cosmetically restored in 2002.

207, Class H, was built by Baldwin in January 1872, #2669, as Northern Pacific 24.  It was sold to CM&StP as 207 and retired before 1899.

259, "D. L. Bush", Class H, was built by Niles & Co. in April 1856 as Racine & Mississippi "Rockton" It became Western Union RR 12 "D. L. Bush" and was rebuilt at Racine in 1874. It became CM&StP 259 in 1879 and was scrapped before 1899.

269, Class H, was built by Swinburn at an unknown date. as Western Union R 22 "W. S. Field". It became CM&StP 269 in 1879 and was scrapped in 1893.

287, Class H, was built by Mason August 1857 as Dubuque South Western "Prairie King". It became CM&StP 287 in 1881. It was scrapped by 1893. The engineer was George S. Perry.

1438, Class H2, was built by Niles & Co. in 1854 as Watertown & Baraboo Valley "Watertown". It became M&StP 42 "D.A.Olin" in 1868. On April 11, 1899, it was renumbered 1438, Class H2. It was scrapped on September 20, 1904. This engine featured Davis Balanced Valves, which were an early piston valve.

1243, Class H-3, was built by Taunton in March 1866, #378, as M&StP 60, "S.S.Merrill". It was renumbered 244 in July 1898, 1243 in 1899, 1422 in April 1910, and 141 in May 1913. It was retired July 24, 1914.

1245, Class H-3, was built by Baldwin In August 1868, #1754, as M&StP 126, "D. Ferguson". It was renumbered 409 in 1898 and 1245 in 1899. It was scrapped by 1907.

1397, Class H-3, was originally Kickapoo Valley & Northern 3. This was the line between Wauseka, WI, and La Farge. It was acquired by the Wisconsin & Western, where the locomotive kept the same number, on November 25, 1899. In March 1903 it became CM&StP 1397, Class H-3. It was renumbered 138 in June 1913, and retired October 15, 1917.

1262, Class H-3, was built by Mason in 1870 as Milwaukee & St. Paul 155 "Tomah". It was renumbered 1267 in 1899 and gone by 1907.

1323, Class H-3, was built by Grant in 1873 as Western Union RR 33 "Burlington". It became CM&StP 280 in 1879. It was renumbered 1323 in 1913 and retired in January 1913.

1343, Class H-3, was built by Brooks in 1876, #279, as Chicago & Pacific 4. It became CM&StP 335 in 1880. It was renumbered 428 in August 1892, 1343 in April 1899, and 103 in May 1913. It was retired on July 27, 1918.

1356, Class H-3, was built by Baldwin in 1880, #5097, as CM&StP 304. It was renumbered 1356 in 1899 and sold to B. J. Burke for Ozone Lumber Co. in 1913.

1357, Class H-3, was built by Baldwin in May 1880, #5120, as 305. It was renumbered 1357 in 1899 and retired in February 1910. The engineer in the cab was James Mills, who was a second generation locomotive engineer. His father, Omro, was there at the beginning. His son, Phillip (Piggy), also was a passenger engineer between Madison and Chicago and retired in the early 1950s.

1361, Class H-3, was built by Grant in 1880 as 380.  It was renumbered 1361 on March 1899 and renumbered 115 in June 1913.  It was scrapped on January 26, 1918.

1375, Class H-3, was built in Grant in 1880 as 382.  It was renumbered 1375 in April 1899 and renumbered 126 in May 1913.  It was sold on May 15, 1918.

1424, Class H-3, was built by Taunton in May 1870, #497, as 150.  It was renumbered 1242 in 1899 and renumbered 1424 in 1910.  It was retired in 1912.

215, Class H-4, was built by Schenectady in September 1880, #1280, as 363.  It was renumbered 762 in April 1899 and renumbered 215 in December 1912.  It was scrapped on May 13, 1919.

220, Class H-4, was built by Schenectady in February 1891, #1322, as 392.  It was renumbered 767 in April 1899 and renumbered 220 in December 1912.  It was scrapped on November 20, 1917.

624, Class H-5a, was built by Manchester in October 1882, #1090.  It was renumbered 706 in April 1899 and 406 in October 1912.  It was scrapped on October 21. 1918.

316, Class H-5c was built at West Milwaukee in 1890. It was renumbered 802 in April 1899 and 425 in October 1912. It was scrapped May 27, 1919. Joseph B. Howard is standing to the left.

504, Class H-6d, was built by Rhode Island in 1886, #1690, as 688. It was renumbered 554 in 1899 and 504 in 1912. It was scrapped in May 1926.

505, Class H-6d, was built by Rhode Island in 1886, #1692, as 689. It was renumbered 555 in April 1899 and 505 in January 1913. It was scrapped in December 17, 1926.

510, Class H-6d, was built by Brooks in October 1886, #1148, as 705.  It was renumbered 560 in April 1899 and 510 in March 1913.  It was scrapped on April 28, 1926.

515, Class H-6d, was built by Cooke in May 1887, #1758, as 725.  It was renumbered 565 in April 1899 and 515 in January 1913.  It was scrapped on October 20, 1926.

520, Class H-6d, was built by Cooke in May 1987, #1763, as 730,  It was renumbered 570 in April 1899 and 520 in December 1920.  It was scrapprd on  December 31, 1926.

527, Class H-6d, was built by Grant in 1887 as 737. It was renumbered 577 in April 1899. Then it became 527 in January 1913. It was numbered X999 in June 1938 and scrapped on June 12, 1947,

535, Class H-6, was built by Brooks in March 1890, #1599, as Milwaukee & Northern 39.  It became CM&StP 939 in 1893.  It was renumbered 737 in April 1899 and 535 in October 1912,  It was scrapped in July 16, 1927.

701, Class H-7, was built by Rhode Island in 1882, #1273. as 614.  It was renumbered 501 in April 1899 and 701 in December 1912.  It was scrapped on October 5, 1932.

704, Class H-7, was built by Rhode Island in 1882, #1276, as 617. It was renumbered 504 in April 1899 and 704 in December 1912. On July 30, 1932 it was sold to the Manchester & Oneida as 5. It was scrapped in 1951.

705, Class H-7, was built in Rhode Island in 1882, #1277, as 618.  It was renumbered 505 in April 1899 and 705 in December 1912,  It was retired on July 9, 1927.

707, Class H-7, was built by Rhode Island in 1882, #1279, as 620. It was renumbered 507 in April 1899 and 707 in November 1912. It's last use was on the Wasaukee branch where Kurt's dad would frequently ride with a friend who was the engineer's son. It was retired on October 5, 1932.

710, Class H-7, was built by Rhode Island in November 1882, #1289, as 626.  It was renumbered 510 in April 1899 and 710 in December 1912.  It was scrapped on June 30, 1927.

718, Class H-7a, was built by Rhode Island in June 1886, #1676, as Chicago Evanston & Lake Shore 2. It became CM&StP 19 in 1887. It was renumbered 655 in March 1891, 518 in April 1899, and 718 in December 1912. It was scrapped on July 16, 1930.

732, Class H-7d, was built by Baldwin in February 1901, #18699, as Davenport Rock Island & North Western 3. It became CM&StP 522 in January 1906. It was renumbered as 747 in April 1908 and as 732 in December 1912. It was scrapped September 29, 1928.

900, Class H-8, was built by Rogers in August 1904, #6228, as Southern Indiana Ry. 206. It became Chicago Terre Haute & Southeastern 206 in 1910. In October 1922 it became CM&StP 900. It was renumbered 40 in June 1938, then 34 in February 1941, and 97 in May 1945. It was scrapped on June 15, 1947.

903, Class H-8, was built by Rogers in August 1904 #6231, as SIRy. 209. It became CTSE 209 in 1910. In December 1922 it became CM&StP 903. It was renumbered 41 in July 1938, then 35 in March1941, and 98 in May 1945. It was retired March 6, 1951.

904, Class H-8, was built by Rogers in August 1904, #6232, as SIRy 210. It became CTSE 210 in 1910 and CM&StP 904 in September 1922. It was renumbered 42 in July 1938, 36 in March 1941, and 99 in May 1945. It was retired September 15, 1949.

 

 

The last 4-4-0 "acquired" by the Milwaukee was in reality Baltimore & Ohio 25. It was borrowed and repainted as Milwaukee & Mississippi 1 for the Centennial Celebration in November 1950. On the 20th it pulled 2 borrowed B&O coaches from Wauwatosa to Milwaukee on a bitter cold day.
