Oliver Iron Mining Co.

 

One of the earliest uses of diesel locomotives in Northern Minnesota was the Oliver Iron Mining Co. They had HH1000s from Alco before the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range acquired their Yellowstones. Here are a few photos of this operation from years past.

Steam power was eliminated shortly after the end of WWII.

83 was one of the earlier switchers.

Here is 600 out of service. I have no roster information on this locomotive.

The 900's were all switchers, beginning with Alco HH1000s, Baldwin VO1000s, and other models ending with Electro-Motive SW1200s.

928, DS4-4-1000, was built by Baldwin in June 1949, #74188.

929, DS4-4-1000, was built by Baldwin in June 1949, #74189.

930, DS4-4-1000, was built by Baldwin in June 1949, #74190.

931, DS4-4-1000, was built by Baldwin in July 1949, #74191.

932, DS4-4-1000, was built by Baldwin in July 1949, #74192.

941, SW1200, was built by Electro-Motive in March 1954, #19534, FN 4272-1.  It was transferred as United States Steel Corp 941 and sold to Rail Switching Servicr as RSSX 952.  It was sold as Georgia Central RR 952.  It was rebuilt by Brookville Equipment by BL14CG in 2010 as Buffalo & Pittsburgh 1401.

The 1000s were smaller switchers, including some Army surplus Whitcomb 65 Ton locomotives, and some General Electric 70 Ton locomotives.

The 1100s were road switchers from Alco beginning with RS2s.

1109, RS3, was built by Alco in June 1950, #78067.  It was sold as Michigan Limestone & Chemical Co 123 and sold  to Midwest Railway Preservation Society (Lake Shore Railway Assn) in 1991.  It was lettered as Lorain & West Virginia 123.  I caught it enroute to Minnesota from Alco when it was just built.

The 1200s were cow and calf units built by Alco and Baldwin, and later by Electro-Motive.

1203, S8, was built by Baldwin in August 1951, #75246.

1205B, S8B, was built by Baldwin in October 1951, #75492.

1206, S8, was built by Baldwin in November 1951, #75490.

1206B, S8B, was built by Baldwin in November 1951, #75493.

1207A, TR6A, was built by Electro-Motive in October 1951, #14829, FN 6321-A1.  It was sold to Larry's Truck Equipment as LTEX 1207.

1208B, TR6B, was built by Electro-Motive in October 1951, #14833, FN 6321-B2.  It was sold as LTEX 1208 in 1998.

1212A, TR6A, was built by Electro-Motive in May 1952, #17052, FN 6152-A1.  It was transferred as United States Steel Corp 1212 and later sold as LTEX 1212.  It was scrapped in 2010.

1212B, TR6B, was built by Electro-Motive in December 1951, #14838, FN 6332-B2.  It was sold as LTEX 1212.

1217B, SSB9B, was built by Alco in October 1956, #82311.  It was sold as Arch of Kentucky 1217.

1218A, SSD9A, was built by Alco in October 1956, #81818.  It was sold as Arch 1218.

1218B, SSB9B, was built by Alco in October 1956, #82312.
