During 1950, MTA ordered 50 PCCs from Pullman-Standard. These were the last new cars built for MTA and also the last PCCs built by Pullman-Standard. They were 5 inches longer and 4 inches wider than the earlier cars and used air brakes instead of the all-electric features of late model PCCs. They were delivered beginning in April 1951 and were assigned to Beacon Street. In 1959 they were overhauled and assigned to the new Highland Branch. This is a ten mile rapid transit line through Brookline and Newton using a former Boston & Albany commuter line. The trackage was connected to the existing system and electrified for MTA operation. In 1961 the wheels were replaced with solid steel wheels to stabilize riding qualities. In 1963 speed regulating relays were installed to correct electrical troubles caused by steady high speed running.

Don's Depot We should take as a maxim never to be surprised at current
difficulties, no more than at a passing breeze, because with a little patience
we shall see them disappear. Time changes everything. ---St. Vincent de Paul
