All-Electric PCCs 3197-3221
While still waiting for the final delivery of the MU cars, Boston Elevated placed an order for 25 single unit PCCs which would be all electric. These cars included the slant front window, and they also had standee windows and a monitor roof to provide for forced air ventilation. These were the prototype cars for many which would be built for other cities. 3201 ran on Shaker Heights Rapid Transit in Ohio, and this led to an order for that system.
The first 20 cars went to North Point Carhouse, and the last 5 were assigned to Arborway. After 1953 they were all sent to Cambridge after a repainting and refurbishing. In late 1955, 12 cars were sent to Mattapan for the high speed line. Five more were added in April 1956. This line was separated from the rest of the system, and cars 3197-3213 were marooned for the next five years. 3214-3221 remained at Cambridge until 1958. 3214 and 3215 went to Mattapan and the others returned to Arborway.
In 1960, the Mattapan cars were replaced by the Texas Rangers, and they were sent to Arborway. While there, they were refurbished and converted to MU operation. They were not particularly successful in this type of service, and were soon stored until General Electric engineers worked out the bugs. They then were used for both single car and multiple-unit use. In 1966, 3197, 3198, and 3201 were sent back to Mattapan to supplement the Dallas cars.
They were the quietest and smoothest riding cars on the system, but they were not otherwise successful due to maintenance problems.

When I say, "My foot is slipping,"
Your mercy, O LORD, sustains, me.
