In order to cross from the Canada into the US where the St. Clair River serves as a border, the Grand Trunk RR built a long tunnel between Sarnia, ONT, and Port Huron, MI. The original power was double ended tank engines, but it quickly was apparent that electric traction was needed. The tunnel was electrified in 1907. With the advent of diesels, the engine change at each end was deemed an expense that could be avoided. Electrification ended around 1960. The locomotives were very interesting box cabs of two types.

152, Class Z-2-a, was built by Baldwin-Westinghouse in October 1907, #31924. It was originally 1308, renumbered to 2658 in 1910, renumbered to 9152 in 1923, and finally numbered 152 in December 1949. It was scrapped in February 1959.

153, Class Z-2-a, was built by Baldwin-Westinghouse in October 1907 #31870. It was originally 1307. Renumbered 2657 in 1910, renumbered to 9153 in 1923, and finally numbered 153 in December, 1949. It was scrapped in February 1959.

175, Class Z-3-a, was built by Baldwin-Westinghouse in July 1916, #43681. It was originally Chicago Lake Shore & South Bend 505. With the change of voltage under the Insull management, it was surplus and sold to the StCT as 9175 in March 1927. It was renumbered 175 in December 1949 and scrapped in April 1959.

176, Class Z-3-a, was built by Baldwin-Westinghouse in July 1916, #43682. It was originally CLS&SB 506. With the change of voltage under the Insull management, it was surplus and sold to the StCT as 9176 in March 1927. It was renumbered 176 in December 1949 and scrapped in February 1959.

707, a line car, was a box cab diesel built by English Electric in 1928, #734.
