Center Cab Diesels
During the depression and just before World War II, the Milwaukee Road invested in a group of small diesels for branch lines and small yard switching. Here are several pictures and information on these locomotives.
1801, 80GE, was built by Whitcomb in June 1930, #50005 as 5801. In 1939 it was renumbered E91. It was rebuilt by Whitcomb in August 1941 as 1801. It was sold to the U S Government on October 7, 1944.
1690, 44 Ton, was built by General Electric in September 1940, #12909, It became Class 3.6G-S. It was renumbered 1699, and then 990 in 1959, and traded in to Electro-Motive in 1967.
1702 , 44DE18, was built by Whitcomb in October 1941, #60090. It became Class 3.5W-S and was renumbered 993 in 1959. It was sold as Northern Waterways 100 in 1968.
1705, 44DE18, was built by Whitcomb in October 1941, #60093. It became Class 3.8W-S and was renumbered 995 in 1959, It was sold to the Ortner Co. on January 6, 1960, and then became Midland Ross Corp. 995.
1706, 44DE18,, was built by Whitcomb in October 1941, #60094. It became Class 3.8W-S and was renumbered 996 in 1959. It was retired in 1966.
